1179 militants surrender in Barak valley,

Minister Hazarika appeals Ulfa(I) to join peace process

Guwahati: A total of 1,179 cadres belonging to militant outfits namely Bru Revolutionary Army of Union (BRAU) and United Democratic Liberation Front of Barak (UDLF-B) surrendered in a ceremony held at Katlichera of Hailakandi district in Barak valley on 12 December. Rebels of two Barak-based outfits formally laid down their arms before State assembly speaker Biswajit Daimary and minister Pijush Hazarika. They deposited 18 AK series rifles and other small arms.

Addressing the gathering, minister Hazarika commented that it’s good news that the militants have given up arms to join the mainstream for peace and progress of Assam, especially for the development of Barak valley. He added that in the last one and a half years during  tenure of the present government under CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, almost all militant groups have returned to the mainstream. Hazarika also appealed to the leaders of United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent) to join the peace process for sake of the State’s development and lasting peace. He assured that the government would take steps to resolve the demands of the militant groups in accordance with the law.

In presence of State police additional chief (special branch) Hiren Chandra Nath, legislators Krishnendu Paul, Bijoy Malakar, Suzam Uddin Laskar, Zakir Hussain, Nijam Uddin Choudhury, for State minister Gautam Roy, IGP Kangkan Jyoti Saikia, Hailakandi district magistrate and police chief with others, assembly speaker Daimary handed over cheques of Rs 50,000 each to ten schools of the Reang community as the one time assistance.
