F.I.R’s  filed against Prateek Hajela !!

For more than 5 years, Prateek Hajela was the face of the historic National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, but he became subject to controversy after its implementation last year. Hajela, a 1995 batch IAS officer, has been accused of tampering with NRC data, due to which 5 FIR’s have been filed against him so far. Prateek Hajela is also the target of the Assam government.

NRC came into force in Assam on August 31 last year, due to which 19 lakh people were excluded from the list. Since then, 5 FIRs have been filed, accusing Hajela of tampering with NRC data and misappropriation of funds. Of these, three FIRs were filed by Assam Public Works (APW), the main petitioner in the NRC updating  process. APW claims that it will continue attacking Hajela, and will file a total of 22 FIR’s.

The 50-year-old Hajela  was appointed by the  Honorable  Supreme Court as NRC State Coordinator from which he was released  from duty in November last year, and presently he is posted in Madhya Pradesh. On 7th  February, APW filed an FIR in the CID accusing Hajela of tampering  with the data. On 12th  February, Hajela’s name surfaced again. A case was registered against him for missing data from the official NRC website. The FIR was lodged against Hajela by the current NRC Coordinator, who alleged that Hajela failed to renew the contract with Wipro ( the service provider ) . The NRC Coordinator also lodged an FIR against a former female employee for not sharing the password of two official Email IDs which was in use during Hajela’s tenure from 2014 to 2019.

Prior to this FIR, three FIRs have been lodged against Hajela in September, one by APW, the other by Goria Moriya Youth Students Council and the third by someone from Dibrugarh. The state government then issued a statement saying that Hajela was working under the influence of some forces to publish a NRC full of irregularities  bearing the names of illegal foreigners. Subsequently, in November, APW filed another FIR. This time Hajela was accused of misusing the funds allocated by the Center for NRC.
