Guwahati: New Delhi may not subscribe the theory of an independent Tibet, where the Dalai Lama would rule the Himalayan Shangri-la from the Potala palace, but millions of Bharatiya still believe that the Tibetan plateau will emerge as a sovereign land some day, for which hundreds of thousands of Tibetans around the world have continued their march and even readied to be sacrificed for the noble cause. A new book reiterates the spirit of Tibetan independence, while denouncing the evil design of Beijing inside the sacred land for decades. The book titled ‘China’s Colonial Games in Tibet’, edited by veteran journalist-author Vijay Kranti and published by VK media group for the Centre for Himalayan Asia Studies and Engagement (CHASE), comprises nearly 60 essays by 39 leading experts on Tibet and China from different parts of the globe. The hard-bound 486-page book (priced at Rs 2500 and USD 40) emerges as an act of collective courage while providing comprehensive information to the scholars, researchers, diplomats, policy makers on security, strategy, defense studies, etc.
This book is a collection of intriguing articles picked up from over 30 international webinars, organized by the New Delhi-based think-tank CHASE within 2020 and 2023, on various sensitive issues related to Tibet and China. This collection of essays and presentations covers all relevant issues including the colonial games, relentlessly played by the Beijing administration in their other colonies including East Turkestan, Southern Mongolia, Hong Kong, Manchuria, etc. The writer, a hardcore admirer of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, acknowledged the support from Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) while organizing the interactions.
Forwarding the book, Dalai Lama wrote, “Situated on the Roof of the World, Tibet is the source of many of Asia’s great rivers. Therefore, protecting the environment of the Tibetan plateau is of the utmost importance. The plateau plays a crucial role in the global climate system- so much so that scientists have called it the Third Pole. The rivers that flow from Tibet sustain the lives of over a billion people across Asia,” adding, “I have made repeated efforts to safeguard my homeland and my people. Because our cause is grounded in truth and justice, I remain hopeful that we will achieve a peaceful and mutually acceptable resolution to our long-standing struggle.” He also hoped that this book will help raise greater awareness about Tibet and the ongoing efforts to find a lasting solution through dialogue conducted in a spirit of understanding and mutual respect.
The book includes pieces from a few best known experts and experienced global communicators namely Bhuchung Tsering, Chin Jin, Claude Arpi, Dechen Palmo, Eleanor Byrne-rosengren, Enghebatu Togochog, Envar Tohti, Ethan Gutmann, Gabriel Lafitte, Geshe Lhakdor, Ilshat Hassan Kokbore, Jayadeva Ranade, Jennifer Zeng, John Jones, Kai Mueller, Karma Tenzin, Lhadon Tethong, Lhagyari Namgyal Dolkar, Marco Respinti, Martin A Mills, Mei Lin Pan, Miek Boltjes, Milap Chand Sharma, Youdon Aukatsang, UweMeya, ThubtenSamphel, ThinleyChukki, Tenzin Pasang, Marco Respinti, etc. Some outstanding names among these contributing authors include Professor Robert Destro (former assistant secretary of State in the first government of President Donald Trump), Prof Samdhong Rinpoche (former elected premier of Central Tibetan Administration) and Penpa Tsering (elected CTA President), etc. They are unanimous in views that the struggling Tibetans inside and outside Tibet should get their political dues so that the mental agony for hundreds of thousands of aspiring Tibetan youths can be neutralized.
