Local’s cooperation sought to conserve Doloni Beel

Guwahati: With an aim to conserve Doloni Beel, a unique wetland in western Assam with significance to the socio-economy, agriculture and biodiversity of northeast India, a dialogue has been initiated soliciting effective cooperation from the local communities.
A community consultation was organised recently in Sankarghola village under Boitamari block of Bongaigaon district by Aaranyak, a premier research-based biodiversity conservation group where the role of local communities in conservation of Doloni Beel was highlighted. The meet held on the bank of Doloni Beel was participated by over 150 villagers from the fringe areas.
The participants agreed that a serious effort by the government, NGOs and local residents was needed to protect the wetland from excessive resource utilization, pollution and other harmful practices as well as preserve its ecosystems. They also opined that locals should get equitable benefits from its resources while managing the wetland.
