Former Chief Justice of India Shri Ranjan Gogoi is nominated to the Rajya Sabha !!
The notification states-
“In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-clause (a) of clause (1) article 80 of the Constitution of India, read with clause (3) of that article, the President is pleased to nominate Shri Ranjan Gogoi to the Council of States to fill the vacancy caused due to the retirement of one of the nominated member.”

Son of former Chief Minister of Assam, late Shri Kesab Chandra Gogoi, Ranjan Gogoi did his schooling in Dibrugarh Don Bosco School, and went on to graduate from St Stephen’s College, Delhi with honours in history before attending Delhi University where he got his Law degree. Than Gogoi enrolled at the bar of Guwahati High Court in 1978 and started his law career. After over two decades of practicing as an advocate in Guwahati High Court, Gogoi was appointed as a permanent Judge on february 2001 in Guwahati High Court. He was later transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High Court on 9 september 2010, and after five months on 12 february 2011 he became the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court. A year later on 23rd April, 2012 he was elevated as a judge to the Supreme Court of India. And on 3rd october, 2018 he bacame the Chief Justice of India succeeding Justice Dipak Mishra.
During his career he gave many a landmark judgement, prominent and historic among them was the Ram janmabhoomi – Babri Masjid verdict. Gogoi was known to be a very strict and no nonsense judge. Disposing cases fast and effectively was his trademark. During his tenure as Chief Justice of India, Gogoi also monitored the NRC (National Register of Citizens) work of Assam. After his retirement he came back to his native state Assam and settled in Guwahati.
