Guwahati: Assam deserves to be made free from child labour and child marriage by 2006 as visualized and initiated by State chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, commented by Shyamal Prasad Saikia, chairman of Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (ASCPCR). Gracing a workshop on ‘Preventing and Combating Child Trafficking’, held at the Darrang district commissioner’s office on 25 July 2024, Saikia stated that the anti-child marriage campaign in the State has achieved significant success under the leadership of CM Sarma.

The workshop was organized by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights in collaboration with the ASCPCR and district administration, which was also attended by Mangaldai legislator Basanta Das, district magistrate Munindra Nath Ngatey, district police chief Prakash Sonowal with other officials from various government departments and representatives of civil society groups, etc.
ASCPCR chairman also appreciated the leadership and unwavering efforts of the Darrang district commissioner in implementing the joint action plan on prevention of drugs & substance abuse among the children & illicit trafficking in the district. He presented a certificate of appreciation to DC Ngatey noting that he is the first to receive such recognition from the State commission.
The program was also attended by district child welfare committee chief Budhin Hazarika, joint health director Ramesh Chandra Bhattacharya, district social welfare officer Kosheshwar Bora, district labour officer Prasenjit Talukdar, Mayukh Goswami from special adoption centre and child protection officer Gautam Saharia.
