Guwahati: Assam Governor professor Jagdish Mukhi on the special occasion of World Health Day conferred the Shankar Lal Goenka award of Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute on former AIIMS cancer institute chief and NCI-India head professor GK Rath for his outstanding contribution in the field of oncology at a function held in the city.
Speaking on the occasion, Governor Mukhi commented that stalwarts in the field of cancer like professor Rath can play a crucial role to promote research on the causative factors of cancers. They can play an important part in interacting with policy makers for the management of cancer, he added.
Congratulating professor Rath for his humble contributions to the field of cancer care, the Governor revealed that he had visited all north-eastern States offering technical expertise for establishment of cancer centres. Instituted by Jeevan Ram Mungi Devi Charitable Trust, the SL Goenka award at BBCI recognizes the contribution of renowned oncologists across the country.
The Governor hailed the Centre for earmarking rupees 129 crore for establishment of adult & paediatric hematological cancer facilities at BBCI. The Institute has already started bone marrow transplantation which is first of its kind in the public sector hospital across the region. BBCI has also brought out a journal ‘Annals of Oncology Research & Therapy’ to provide a platform for publication of research work on cancer.
Professor Mukhi expressed happiness to the fact that various post graduate and super specialty courses in oncology conducted by BBCI have contributed significantly to human resource generation. The holistic approach to treatment of cancer with care, compassion and empathy is the need of the hour for a better quality of life. It is therefore important to offer value based care to patients, added the Governor.
In presence of the JRMDC trust chairman SL Goenka, BBCI director Dr AC Kataki, Srimanta Shankardeva University of Health Sciences vice-chancellor Dr Dhruba Jyoti Bora, eminent film maker Jahnu Barua and a host of other dignitaries, the Governor also unveiled a book titled ‘Triple C in Cancer’ highlighting various aspects of cancer for control, cure and care.
