NHRC hearing in Guwahati concludes, recommends ₹20.50 lakh as compensation

Guwahati: The two-day camp sitting and public open hearing of National Human Right Commission (NHRC) India concluded on Friday in the city with recommendation of rupees 20.50 lakh as relief in cases of violation of human rights of people belong to different communities of five north-eastern States.
The meeting took up 40 cases where the majority was from Assam (23), followed by Manipur (13), Nagaland (3) and Arunachal Pradesh (1 case). On consideration of reports and after hearing both the parties, the NHRC closed five cases where recommendations of compensation were compiled by the States.
The NHRC recommended an amount of rupees 5 lakh in case of death in police custody under Imphal east district of Manipur. Further, it recommended an amount of rupees 4.5 lakh to be paid to the next of kin of the deceased in case of death in custody under Mon district of Nagaland.
It also recommended a compensation of rupees 3 lakh to be paid to the next of kin in case of death in police custody under Tinsukia district. Similarly, the same amount was recommended in case of an encounter death in Changlang district of Arunachal.
While dealing with a case of rape (of a tribal women) by a GRP personnel in Chachar district, it asked the State authorities for payment of rupees 5 lakh to the victim. State authorities submitted that both the delinquent police personnel were already dismissed from service.
Later the Commission held a discussion with NGOs / HRDs and members of civil society groups where it reiterated that the NGOs are actually the eyes and ears of the Commission and they are true partners in spreading awareness regarding promotion and protection of human rights.
