Northeast  loses one more scribe to Covid-19

Guwahati: Northeast  loses one more scribe to Covid-19 as Ukhrul (Manipur) based television journalist Thotshang Shaiza
succumbed to the novel corona virus infection related ailments on 12 June 2021. Shaiza (52), who worked for ISTV cable news channel and
also a Tangkhul newspaper, passed away while undergoing treatment at Jawaharlal Nehru medical sciences institute in Imphal. Manipur
hill-journalist’s union and Ukhrul district journalist’s association have condoled his untimely demise.
Manipur earlier lost Saikhom Shantikumar (51), who worked in the news desk of Ireibak daily newspaper in Imphal, to the pandemic. Prior to
him, senior journalist Sagolsem Hemant passed away with  corona complications while undergoing treatment at the hospital. Hemant (65)
worked for various newspapers like Pudin, Eikhoigee Panthung, Ningtam Lanpao, etc. Tripura lost two scribes (Jitendra Debbarma and Tanmoy Chakraborty) to
corona complications where Assam witnessed the demise of more than ten journalists to the virus aggravated ailments. Two eminent Assamese
author-journalists Dr Lakshmi Nandan Bora and Homen Borgohain recently lost their battles to Covid-19 complications. Earlier, the State
witnessed the deaths of Rubul Dihingiya, Anirban Bora, Kalyan Barooah, Nilakshi Bhattacharyya, Aiyushman Dutta, Jadu Chutia, Shivacharan
Kalita, Golap Saikia, Ashim Dutta and  Dhaneshwar Rabha in the corona related illness.
India remains at the top of the list of corona victims among journalists with 246 casualties for followed by Brazil (239 dead),
Peru (163), Mexico (112), Colombia (66), Italy (58), etc. According to the Geneva based Press Emblem Campaign, at least 1503 journalists died
of Covid-19 in 77 countries till date since March 2020. Severely affected other countries include Bangladesh (53), Ecuador (51), USA (49), Iran (32), Argentina, United Kingdom (30 each), Dominican Republic, Pakistan, Turkey (27 each),  Russia (21), Venezuela (20), Nepal (19), etc.
