Guwahati: State PHED minister Jayanta Mallabaruah officially launched the first Jal Shala, under the Jal Doot program at an event in Pachariya locality of Kamrup district. Mentionable is that Jal Doot program has been initiated to act as a community-level voluntary system that carries out functionality and impact assessment of various water supply schemes and finally sensitizes the community on its sustainability.
Fundamental objective of the program is to create a network of dedicated volunteers among higher class students (known as Jal Doots), who act as a catalyst for change within their communities. About the initiative, Mallabaruah commented that it’s an unique idea and other Indian States can adopt it as a model. He reiterated that initiatives like this would encourage students to work for community development and help build in them a leadership quality which would benefit them in the long run.
Referring to the JJM progress in Assam, the minister mentioned that almost 50% of Assam’s population have already been covered through the FHTCs. But the State government is aiming towards 100% coverage soon. JJM will ensure clean drinking water in each and every household which will reduce water borne diseases to a great extent, added Mallabaruah.
