Guwahati: Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) has picked up two State party presidents for Assam and Manipur. The party’s national president Jagat
Prakash Nadda have appointed Bhabesh Kalita and Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi for the new party responsibilities respectively.
Kalita, a Saffron legislator from Rongia assembly constituency in lower Assam has been assigned as the State BJP chief, replacing
Ranjeet Kumar Dass, a cabinet minister in Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma led coalition government in Dispur.
Hailing from Sutarkuchi village under Kamrup district, Kalita is a law graduate and served as a minister in Sarbananda Sonowal’s cabinet
in last BJP led government of Assam. A follower of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh ideology, Kalita was poured with wishes from the
party leaders and workers on the ground. Speculations arose that Sonowal would be given the responsibility as
he was replaced by Sarma after winning the last State assembly polls and the gentleman politician declared that he would not leave for New
Delhi very soon. Present central minister Rameswar Teli and Parliamentarian Kamakhya Prasad Tasa were also projected for the post.
Meanwhile, an active saffron leader Sharda Devi, who joined the BJP in 1995, was assigned to lead the party in Manipur. The post was lying
vacant following the death of professor Saikhom Tikendra Singh in Covid-19 complications recently at Imphal hospital.
State chief minister N Biren Singh congratulated her for being appointed as the party chief of Manipur, which is going for assembly
polls next year. Saffron workers in Myanmar bordering State express hope that the experienced lady would be able to lead the party in the
coming days.
