Assam CM appeals to buy handloom Gamosas in Rongali Bihu

Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday inaugurated a golden silk park & commercial centre at Khanapara in the city. Apart from providing silkworm breed to silkworm farmers, Sarma expected that the initiative of handloom & textiles and sericulture department will provide a platform to indigenous silk weavers to sell their produce.
Sarma also appealed to every Assamese individual to take the pledge to purchase at least one handloom-woven Gamosa in the coming Rongali Bihu celebration. If six million families in the State decide to purchase it, the indigenous weavers would be enormously benefited, commented Sarma and also asked the people to remain vigilant against selling of powerloom-produced Gamosas.
“Assamese Gamosa bagging the Geographical Indications (GI) tag, coupled with numerous initiatives of Assam government aimed at strengthening the handloom sector have led to build-up of a newfound confidence among the handloom entrepreneurs in the State,” said Sarma adding that under the Swanirbhar Nari scheme over 1.5 lakh Gamosas were procured by Artfed directly from the local weavers.
Sarma also stressed upon the need to diversify product portfolio of muga and eri silk, without which handloom entrepreneurs of Assam wouldn’t be able to take advantage of the massive market across the country and abroad. He was accompanied by State minister UG Brahma with others. Later Sarma attended a weaving training camp at Latasil playground and participated in a friendly cricket match between CM XI and CJ XI at Judges’ field the city.
