Guwahati: Assam Governor professor Jagdish Mukhi, who serves as the chancellor of all State universities, has constituted a
three-member committee on empowerment of three autonomous colleges, which are going to implement National Education Policy 2020. The
committee is expected to submit its report within 30 days. Headed by Assam government’s education adviser professor Mihir Kanti
Chaudhuri, the committee also comprises State higher education principal secretary B Kalyan Chakravarthy and Jagannath Barooah
College (Jorhat) principal Dr Bimal Barah as its members. The high-powered committee will work out ways and means to empower the
autonomous colleges assessing the resources required for the purpose. Mentionable is that chairing a review meeting held at Raj Bhavan on 29
June, Governor Mukhi agreed to grant more powers to North Lakhimpur College (Lakhimpur), Jagannath Barooah College (Jorhat) and Nowgong
College (Nagaon) for implementing NEP 2020. He also asked the government to fill up all vacant faculty positions in as early as
possible and ensure that no contractual teachers remain on the roll. Professor Mukhi directed State education minister Dr Ranuj Pegu to
transfer the secondary education courses in these institutions to other senior secondary schools so that they can concentrate
exclusively on quality degree courses. Minister Pegu expressed hope that the concerned colleges using their autonomy would concentrate on
rendering quality education. They should also vie for creating good human resources by producing more entrepreneurs (job givers rather than job seekers), stated Pegu
adding that the educational institutions should also educate potential non enrolled students in local areas under the extension service.
