FIR lodged against Assam IGP

Guwahati: A senior police officer in Assam faces a first information report (FIR) for his descripition of an illicit relationship between an accused and a murder victim lady in Goalpara district in fornt of media persons. Husband of the victim (identified as Chandra Kumar Nath) filed the FIR at Matia police station against the inspector general of police (IGP) Debraj Upadhyay for his public narration.
Jonali Nath, a distrcit level Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader was found dead on National Highway 17 on 11 June evening. Later the police arrested a local businessman named Hasanur Islam suspecting his involvement with the crime. Hasanur later confessed to the police that he had an extra marital relationship with the lady and killed Ms Nath out of a heated argument in a vehicle.
While addressing a press conference on Monday, Upadhyay (empolyed with the criminal investigation department) commented that unmarried Hasanur had an affair with Ms Nath (who has two young daughters) for the past two years. They had quarrel after Hasanur revealed his plan to marry a girl. Upadhyay claimed that it tempted the debates and finally Ms Nath fall prey to Hasanur’s anger.
Meanwhile, expressing utter dismay over the ‘lucid’ narration by Upadhyay, a forum of natinalist citizens urged the State home department to direct its officials to dedicate more time, space and energy to a genuine probe rather than indulging in the practice of storytelling to the media. In a media statement, the Patriotic People’s Front Assam (PPFA) asserted that a transparent probe must be conducted to find the motive behind the killing.
“There should be a limit of irresponsibility and personal shame when a police officer can explain the ‘love affairs’ of a victim, who has a family with two young daughters. Anyone found guilty in a crime may say anything to influence the probe in their favour. In that case, why did the police officer try to narrate the ‘story’ following the line of the accused? Has he found all the convincing details about the murder so instantly?” said the forum.
