Guwahati: Veteran Rajasthani politician Gulab Chand Kataria was sworn in as the 31st Governor of Assam at a
swearing-in-ceremony held in Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra on Wednesday, where Gauhati High Court chief justice Sandeep Mehta administered the oath of office to the new Governor.
Kataria, who hails from Udaipur and served his State as the leader of opposition in Rajasthan legislative assembly, termed his new responsibility as an honour to be Governor of Assam that gave birth to great Vaishnavite saint, scholar, poet, social reformer Srimanta Sankardev. He also expected that people of the State would render support to the Governor’s office to aid the all-around growth of Assam.
A senior BJP leader, Kataria served his State as minister to various departments including home and he was elected to the Lok Sabha too. Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wished that under his leadership the State government would accelerate the growth momentum of Assam. The brief function was also attended by the first lady Anita Kataria, State assembly speaker Biswajit Daimary, ministers Keshab Mahanta, Ranjit Dass, Atul Bora, Ajanta Neog, Nandita Gorlosa, etc.
Earlier on Sunday Assam bid farewell to outgoing Governor Jagdish Mukhi and his wife Prem Mukhi. He thanked the people for the respect, affection, and support given to the Governor’s office during his stint. Mukhi took charge as the State Governor in 2017 and served the State for more than five years. He was given a farewell at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in the city.
