Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday inaugurated state of the art ‘National Centre of Excellence’ for badminton at Amingaon in North Guwahati and laid the foundation of Amingaon sports complex involving a financial outlay of Rs 320 crore. Speaking on the occasion, Sarma stated that the centre, comprising 16 courts, 3553 seats for spectators, hostels for players, quarters for coaches etc on a 40 thousand square feet areas, will provide critical impetus to training and talent development for the game.
Announcing that the proposed Amingaon sports complex will have a games village for the players, Sarma said that the State government is trying to play host to National Games either on 2025 or 2027. An Olympic standard swimming pool is being built at Amingaon, said Sarma adding that once completed the pool will provide excellent Olympic standard swimming facilities to the players.
Giving a snapshot of all activities that the government has proposed for infrastructure development of sports in Assam, Sarma said that the existing Nehru Stadium will be renovated with all state of the art facilities, where Rs 500 crore will be spent. In presence of State ministers CM Patowary, Atul Bora, Pijush Hazarika, UG Brahma, Jayanta Mallabaruah, Nandita Gorlosa, legislators Bhabesh Kalita, Taranga Gogoi, Hemanga Thakuria, Badminton Association of India’s secretary Sanjay Misra and other dignitaries, Sarma also announced that another stadium will be constructed at Chandrapur area of the city.
