Guwahati: Assam Cabinet meeting under the chairmanship of State chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma begins at Dhemaji this morning. It is for the first time that Sarma led saffron government has organized its cabinet meeting outside the Dispur secretariat in the city. The district magistrate office, circuit houses with other government accommodations at Dhemaji town in eastern Assam were already readied by the authority for the crucial meeting of ministers.
Sarma’s predecessor Sarbananda Sonowal also hold a cabinet meeting at Majuli river island. Then it was a first of its kind to shift the meeting of ministers outside the State capital complex at Dispur. Sonowal was a BJP legislator from Majuli constituency and he was re-elected for the legislative assembly. After inducted to PM Modi’s Union cabinet and recently getting elected to Rajya Sabha, Sonowal resigned as its legislator.
However, not every saffron leader is happy with the decision to hold cabinet meeting outside the capital city with the pompous way spending the government revenues. Senior ruling party legislator Mrinal Saikia took his tweeter account to express resentments. Holding of Cabinet in a remote district is great but what is the need of spending money in Jaakjomokota and carrying journalists from Guwahati to publicise it ? Decisions of Cabinet are always been welcomed by the public without such extravaganza,’ said the Khumtai legislator.
Earlier on Wednesday, CM Sarma visited the residence of Swahid Kanaklata Baruah at Borongabari in Gohpur and paid rich tributes to the young martyr, who sacrificed her life during the freedom movement. Sarma met the martyr’s brother Kalicharan Baruah and spent time with the family members. He commented that the patriotism of Kanaklata Baruah was exemplary and her sacrifice continues to inspire the citizens.
Later, Sarma dedicated two roads in the memories of Kanaklata Baruah and Swahid Mukunda Kakati, who also faced the bullets of British controlled armed forces while trying to raise Tri-colour at Gohpur police station. He also took time to visit the family members of martyr Mukunda Kakati and freedom fighter Rampati Rajkhowa at the same locality.
The energetic chief minister also visited the erosion hit areas of Batiamari in Behali locality and made a thorough inspection of the site. Considering the severity of erosion by the Brahmaputra river that has displaced a number of families, Sarma directed the additional chief secretary to take durable schemes using geo-bag sloping to give permanent succour to the flood & erosion hit people.
Responding to the request of local people, Sarma assured that a high school would be set up at Batiamari and the Monabari road would be reconstructed. He also visited the under-construction Ghahigaon stadium at Gohpur and inspected different aspects of works. He asked the concerned authority to complete the construction works by March next year for the benefit of sports persons. Sarma also inspected an Anganwadi centre at Behali and spent some time with the children.
