Guwahati: As Assam government is planning to bring a bill in the next State legislative assembly session with a focus on protecting cattle (precisely cow), the smugglers along with their illicit beneficiaries feel the heat and now start targeting the forces dedicated for full protection of cows in Bharat.
It may be mentioned that the smuggling of cattle on Indo-Bangladesh border, where Assam lately emerges as an illegal transit route, often makes news. An increasing trend of activities in all Bangladesh bordering north-eastern States (including Assam) has been observed in last two years.
It may be because of a halt in cattle smuggling through West Bengal following the combined efforts BSF personalities based in the State and members of Dhyan Foundation. Lately the non-government organised has formed DF Goalpara Gaushala to rehabilitate the cattle rescued by BSF soldiers in Assam.
Till date, the organization has spent a large amount of money in setting up basic infrastructures and arrangement for transporting cattle to gaushala, feeding and nursing the domestic animals. Looking at the increasing number of rescued cattle, the organisation decided to set up three more shelters in Assam.
The initiative has hit the very backbone of the cattle mafia, giving a severe blow to their illegal venture which generated crores of black money to fund terrorism. Moreover, BJP led Assam government is all set to execute a complete ban on cow transportation to outside the State. Hence the worried mafia is now trying to paralyze the noble cause.
“Our volunteers have received countless threats, often attacked also. There are plenty instances where attempts have been made to pressurize them through certain corrupt offices. And when none of it has worked, the mafia has started to spread defamatory news, to taint the reputation of the organization and belittle their sincere efforts to save the cattle,” said a statement issued by Nirja Singh from DF Goalpara Gaushala.
It also directly accused a section of journalists, understandably on the payroll of cow mafia, as working against the important cause. Citing names of some media persons, the statement asserted that the organisation has taken care of a large number of cow safeguarding those animals from the meat mafia, but they reports with nefarious motives.
