Guwahati: The flood situation in eastern Assam has slightly improved on 26 July 2026 as the intensive rains stopped in most of the State on Saturday, but the death toll rose to 66 on Sunday morning, and hundreds of villages remain under water. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, nearly 7 lakh people in 12 districts were affected by the current wave of flood, where over 35,000 hectares of crop areas were damaged and nearly over 25,000 people arrived at hundreds of relief camps, set up by the administrations. Sivasagar district was the worst affected with around three lakh sufferers, followed by Charaideo and Jorhat. Other flood-hit districts include Golaghat, Dibrugarh, Hojai, Nagaon, Karbi Anglong, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Dhemaji, Kamrup, etc.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi dialed State chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to take stock of rescue and relief operations in the flood-hit localities. Expressing deep condolences over the loss of lives and properties, PM Modi assured Assam government of all possible support for relief, rehabilitation and rebuilding efforts. President Draupadi Murmu also condoled over the devastation in Assam and prayed for the safety of all those affected by the calamity. She also prayed for the well-being of all personnel involved in rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts. “The nation stands in solidarity with the people of Assam,” added President Murmu.
On the ground, personnel belonging to the State Disaster Response Force, National Disaster Response Force, Army, Air Force along with local administration officials and volunteers continue round-the-clock rescue and relief operations. Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya recently chaired a high-level review meeting with the office-bearers belonging to Assam unit of Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) at Lok Bhavan to assess the ongoing humanitarian response for flood-affected people across the State. However, thousands of affected families are still deprived of essential relief materials including drinking water and healthcare aid as colossal damages are reported in a large number of embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructures.
Meanwhile, a central team has arrived in Assam to assess the flood situation in eastern Assam districts. Union home minister Amit Shah informed about the team, while speaking to Sarma a few days back. Central minister Sarbananda Sonowal, while expressing concern over the calamity, stated that both the Centre and Assam government are maintaining close coordination to deal with the situation. State BJP president Dilip Saikia also visited many flood-hit areas and assured necessary assistance from the government.
CM Sarma specifically directed State ministers namely Bimal Bora, Sushanta Borgohain, Pijush Hazarika, Keshav Mahanta and Ajanta Neog to look after the missions on the ground. Initially, it was assumed that a cloudburst in Naga hills during 18-20 July created havoc in Assam, but lately Sarma clarified that the India Meteorological Department had not confirmed about any such catastrophe in Nagaland or Assam during the last few days. He however asserted that Mon, Mokokchung and Wokha districts of Nagaland and its adjacent Assam districts received unprecedented rain falls in those days to inflate the rivers to inundate the villages in downstream localities.
