Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam has improved in the last few days when the death tolls rose to 82 till Saturday morning with around two lakh people remaining affected. The severe flood affecting Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon etc forced thousands of families to take shelter in makeshift camps. Hundreds of relief camps in the flood-hit localities continue to give shelter to more than 75,500 people, many of whom have lost their houses, crops and domestic animals and poultry birds.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reassured the people that the government always stands firmly with the affected families. Thanking the contributors for flood-relief initiatives, Sarma mentioned industrialist Gautam Adani for donating rupees 11 crore to strengthen the relief operations. Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya conducted an aerial survey of flood-affected localities on 30 July. Governor Acharya assured the affected families that the government machinery stands with them at this time of crisis. He directed the district administrations to pay special attention to the needs of children, women, lactating mothers and senior citizens staying in the relief camps so that they are not deprived of essential support.
Meanwhile, India Meteorological Department forecast widespread rainfalls on Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura in the next few days. Earlier, Indian Council of Medical Research warned of water-borne and vector-borne diseases outbreak in the affected villages once the flood water recedes. It urged the authorities to ensure safe drinking water for the families to prevent the epidemic of typhoid, jaundice and dysentery.
