Guwahati: With limited rainfalls in the last few days, the flood situation in Assam has improved, even though the death toll rises to 78 till 30 July 2026 morning. By now the number of affected people has reduced to around three lakh in primarily seven districts namely Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, Biswanath and Kamrup (metro). Over 550 villages are still under the flood water and the calamity has damaged over 21,520 hectares of crop area in those districts.
Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Wednesday reviewed the prevailing flood situation at Lok Bhavan and directed the concerned departments and agencies to ensure an uninterrupted rescue and relief operations. He emphasised on providing adequate relief materials, safe shelter, potable drinking water, healthcare services and other essential support to the affected families. Governor Acharya also appreciated the efforts of the concerned district administrations, ASDMA, SDRF, NDRF, police personnel, healthcare workers, NGOs, volunteers and others engaged in the rescue and relief initiatives.
Union home minister Amit Shah also spoke with Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for the second time in a few days to review the flood situation and assured him of all possible assistance from the Centre for relief, restoration and rebuilding efforts. Meanwhile, the inter-ministerial central team completed a four-day assessment of flood damage in eastern Assam, where it reviewed relief, rescue and restoration efforts. The team members were briefed on extensive damage caused by the unprecedented heavy rainfall in Assam and Nagaland in the last week of July.
