Guwahati: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Friday launched Assam Legislative Assembly digital television in the central hall of assembly, where he recalled the contributions of Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi, BR Ambedkar, Bhupen Hazarika for the multi-party democracy in the largest democracy of the globe.
Speaker Birla, while addressing the State assembly members, however expressed concern over repeated disruptions in the proceedings of Parliament and State legislative assemblies. Terming the obstruction of proceedings ethically wrong, Birla commented that many disruptions are well planned in advance.
“Democracy is based on debates and dialogues. But continuous disruption of proceedings in the house is a matter of concern,” said Birla, adding that the difference of opinions between the treasury and opposition benches is usual. But dissidence should not lead to impasse, he asserted.
Birla opined that a diverse country like India should proceed with parliamentary democracy and as the nation is celebrating 75 years of Independence, it becomes necessary to revisit the house can function fruitfully.
State assembly speaker Biswajit Daimary, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma earlier welcomed Birla in the function. Later he graced Pratidin Time’s achiever awards function at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalashetra and before leaving for New Delhi, Birla paid a visit to Kamakhya temple and prayed to the Goddess Kameswari.
