Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday inaugurated Atal Udyan, set up by Guwahati metropolitan development authority (GMDA) at Adabari locality in the city. The park in memory of former Prime Minister Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee is built with a cost of rupees 8 crore 74 lakhs covering an area of 8 bigha. It includes an amphitheatre with capacity of 250 audiences, meditation hall, open air gym, children playing equipment, mural art work with dais etc.
Speaking on the occasion, Sarma informed that the park was completed within seven months. Another such park at Hengrabari area is also coming up, where the botanical garden at Fancy Bazaar (old jail campus) will be opened by 2023, he added. The BJP-led government in Dispur has been constantly striving towards developing open spaces to turn Guwahati into a modern city with lots of greenery and recreational avenues.
“We are also in the process of shifting all government offices to an integrated directorate complex in the Lakhra area of Guwahati and setting up big parks in those vacated office premises. Pursuing our vision of a modern city with healthy living spaces, we also want to build indoor stadiums, swimming pools, sports complexes in all four Guwahati constituencies,” said Sarma.
He also added that Guwahati- North Guwahati bridge will be completed by 2023, while a ring road project is being envisaged around the city with bridges connecting Palasbari-North Guwahati and Kurua-Narengi coming up. Clearing riverfront for beautification in the city by shifting the deputy commissioner and city police commissioner offices are also on the card.
He urged the local communities, specially the womenfolk, to take up responsibility of maintaining these parks and keeping a strict watch over them so that these parks can be utilised for engaging the children and youths in productive activities while keeping them away from drugs and other bad habits. Sarma also handed over cheques of financial assistance to 15 management committees of Guwahati parks.
