Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam has improved significantly as the number of affected families reduced to hardly 4.50 lakh and the death toll remains at around 70 till Tuesday. Charaideo district in eastern Assam continues to be the worst-hit district with 1,88,404 people affected, followed by Sivasagar (1,44,461) and Jorhat (74,458). The unprecedented rains in Assam, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh during the second half of July 2026 inundated a large area putting the life cycles of millions of people in trouble. Thousands of indigenous families turned up to the relief camps for immediate survival and many are waiting to return to their places for rebuilding lives and livelihoods.
President Draupadi Murmu condoled over the devastation in Assam and prayed for the safety of all those affected by the calamity and the personnel engaged in rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts in the flood-hit localities. Prime Minister Narendra Modi dialed Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to take stock of the situation and assured Assam government of all possible support from the central government. Earlier, union home minister Amit Shah also called Sarma and informed about an inter-ministerial central team’s departure to Assam for assessing the flood damages. Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and central minister Sarbananda Sonowal also expressed concern over the calamity and hoped that the situation will be dealt efficiently with close coordination between the Centre and Assam government. Meanwhile, PM Modi on Tuesday reviewed the State’s flood situation with the lawmakers from Assam and reaffirmed the Centre’s unwavering commitment to stand with every affected family
The swollen Brahmaputra river has also inundated a large area of Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, but the overall situation inside the world famous forest reserve remains under control. Indian Council of Medical Research has already warned of water-borne and vector-borne diseases outbreak in the affected villages once the flood water recedes. It urged the authorities to ensure safe drinking water for the families to prevent the epidemic of typhoid, jaundice and dysentery. Amid all the devastation, a ray of hope surfaced when hundreds of individuals and non-government organizations arrived at the sites to support the affected families. Film stars like Bhumi Pednekar appealed for support to hundreds of thousands of Assam flood victims. Along with the government agencies, a large group of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh volunteers and Sewa Bharati workers also joined the relief works in mostly affected localities.
